A retriever is a special kind of gun dog. These dogs are bred to find and bring back game for a hunter.

There are three main groups of gun dogs. These are retrievers, flushing spaniels, and pointing breeds. A retriever's main job is to fetch birds without hurting them. To do this well, they need a soft mouth. A soft mouth means the dog carries things gently. They do not bite or chew on the prize. If a dog has a hard mouth, it might damage the food. This makes the game unfit for a meal.

Working as a retriever involves many specific steps. First, the dog must show steadiness. This means they sit calmly and quietly in small boats. Staying steady keeps the boat from tipping over in cold water. Next, the dog must learn to mark the game. Marking is watching where a falling bird lands. The dog uses its eyes and memory to remember the spot. Sometimes, the dog cannot see the bird fall at all. In this case, the handler gives a whistle or voice command. This helps the dog perform a blind retrieve. The dog follows these directions to find the bird.

Training these dogs takes a lot of time and effort. Breeders look for certain traits to help the dogs work. One important trait is biddableness. This means the dog is smart and wants to learn. They also need a strong desire to retrieve. Some dogs have a drive that is almost manic. They love the scent of feathers and birds. This is often called birdiness. A good retriever also needs a strong nose. They use their noses to find things in thick bushes. They also need to be hardy. This helps them work in icy water or thick woods.
