These dogs must have a "soft mouth." This means they carry birds gently without biting them. This keeps the food safe to eat.

Retrievers must also be very steady. They sit quietly in boats while hunters work. This helps keep the boat from tipping over. They also learn to "mark" birds. This means they watch where a bird falls. They use their eyes and memory to find it.

Sometimes, a dog cannot see the bird fall. The handler uses a voice or whistle to help. This is called a "blind retrieve." The dog follows the sound to find the prize.

Many retrievers are very smart. They love to learn and please people. This makes them great family pets. The Labrador and Golden Retriever are very popular. They can live for 10 to 12 years. Some live up to 15 years.
