A retriever is a specific classification of gun dog. These dogs are bred to find and bring back game for a hunter.

Within the broader category of gun dogs, there are three main groups. These include retrievers, flushing spaniels, and pointing breeds. The primary function that distinguishes a retriever is nonslip retrieval. This means their main job is to fetch birds or other prey without causing damage. To achieve this, breeders select for specific physical and mental traits. These traits ensure the dog can work efficiently in difficult environments.

One of the most critical physical traits is a soft mouth. A soft mouth refers to a dog's ability to carry game without biting into it. This is vital because a dog with a "hard mouth" might chew or crush the prey. A hard-mouthed dog can make the game unpresentable or even inedible.

Beyond the mouth, retrievers must possess biddableness. This term describes a dog that is intelligent, controllable, and eager to learn. They also need a strong desire and drive to work. Some retrievers show "birdiness," which is an exceptional interest in bird scents and feathers. These combined traits make the training process much more effective.

Working as a retriever involves a complex series of trained tasks. First, a dog must maintain steadiness. This means sitting calmly and quietly, often while in a small boat. Steadiness is important for safety in winter conditions. It prevents the boat from capsizing or causing an accidental firearm discharge.

Next, the dog must learn to mark downed game. Marking is the process of watching for a falling bird and remembering its location. A well-trained dog follows the direction of the gun barrel to find the correct spot. This requires excellent eyesight and depth perception.

Sometimes, a dog cannot see where the game has landed. In these cases, the dog must perform a blind retrieve. The handler uses hand, voice, or whistle commands to direct the dog. Most blind retrieves happen within 30 to 80 yards of the gun. However, expert teams can successfully perform these retrieves at distances exceeding 100 yards.

After finding the game, the dog should retrieve to hand. This means the dog holds the bird gently until the handler takes it. This method reduces the risk of a wounded bird escaping.

Retrievers also have specific rules for social behavior and hygiene. When hunting with multiple dogs, a retriever must practice "honoring." This means the dog waits its turn and stays under control while others work. This prevents confusion during the hunt. Additionally, a dog must learn to shake only on command.

If a dog shakes water off its fur while still holding game, it can damage the bird. Shaking in a small boat can also risk tipping the craft. Therefore, trainers use specific commands to tell the dog when it is safe to shake.

Many different breeds fall into the retriever category. The Golden Retriever was originally bred in Scotland to hunt in marshy conditions.

The Poodle is one of the oldest retriever breeds, originally used in Germany and France. Other notable breeds include the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Curly Coated Retriever, and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Some retrievers even serve as disability assistance dogs. Their patient nature and trainability make them excellent helpers. In fact, the Labrador and Golden Retriever are among the top 10 best dogs for families worldwide.

These dogs are highly specialized for both water and land. In waterfowl hunting, they must be hardy enough to enter icy or frigid water. They must also be able to navigate thick, flooded timber. When working as upland flushing dogs, they must "quarter" or move in a pattern in front of the hunter. They must also remain steady to the wing and shot. This means the dog sits still when a bird rises or a gun is fired. This discipline allows the dog to focus on the task without chasing every movement.
