Gun dog

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Gun dogs are specialized breeds of canine trained to assist hunters. They are often called bird dogs because they focus on game. These dogs primarily find and retrieve various types of fowl. Most of this work involves birds shot on the wing. This means the birds are in flight when they are shot.

The term hunting dog is a very broad category. It includes all breeds and all skills of hunting canines. However, the term gun dog is more specific. These dogs are trained to work alongside loud firearms. This is a vital skill during hunting or retrieving. They must remain calm while working near these loud sounds.

Gun dogs are divided into three primary functional categories. The first category includes pointers and setters. These dogs use their instincts to locate game. The second category consists of retrievers. These dogs are trained to fetch game after it is shot. The third category is made up of spaniels. These dogs have different ways of working in the field.

Retrievers include the Golden Retriever and the Labrador Retriever. There are also many other retrievers like the Flat-Coated Retriever. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is another specific example.

Spaniels and water dogs form another important part of the group. Spaniels include the English Cocker Spaniel and the English Springer Spaniel. Some dogs are specifically categorized as water dogs. These dogs help find game in aquatic environments. The Standard Poodle is an example of a water dog. The Portuguese Water Dog and the Spanish Water Dog also fit this role.

Many different breeds show these specialized instinctive skill sets. The Vizsla and the Weimaraner are notable examples. Other breeds include the Braque du Bourbonnais and the Brittany. There are even more specific types like the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is another breed used for these tasks. Each breed has been developed for specific ways of working.

How these dogs are classified depends on the organization. Kennel clubs often group these breeds together for competition. These competitions are called conformation shows. The Kennel Club puts pedigree gun dog breeds into their own group. However, other organizations use different names for them. The American Kennel Club places them in the sporting group. This shows how different people categorize these working animals.
