Mastiff

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A mastiff is a large and powerful type of dog. They are among the largest dogs in the world. These dogs usually have a short coat of hair. They often have large feet and a long, low-set tail.

Their skull is large and bulky. The muzzle is broad and short, which is a shape called brachycephalic. Their ears are pendant-shaped, meaning they hang down.

Historically, mastiffs have served many different purposes. They were often used as guard dogs to protect homes and property. Throughout history, they were also used as hunting dogs and war dogs. Some were even used in blood sports. These included bull-baiting, bear-baiting, and even lion-baiting.

This shows how much humans relied on their strength for various tasks.

Records of mastiff-type dogs go back 3,000 years. These records come from both Europe and Asia. In older English sources, mastiffs were sometimes called bandogs or bandogges. The term "bandog" technically meant a dog tethered by a chain called a "bande." This chain would be released at night.

In the twentieth century, the term "bandog" was used again in the United States. It described large fighting mastiff-type dogs that were crossed with any bulldog.

It is important to distinguish true mastiffs from other large dogs. Archaeological evidence shows mastiffs are distinct in form and function from livestock guardian dogs. They also form separate genetic populations. Some modern breeds have "mastiff" in their name, like the Pyrenean Mastiff or the Tibetan Mastiff. However, these are not considered true mastiffs. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale and some kennel clubs group both types together as molossoid dogs.

Many different mastiff breeds exist today. The English Mastiff comes from the United Kingdom and serves as a guard dog. The Cane Corso is a guard and catch dog from Italy.

The Boerboel is a South African Mastiff used for guarding. Other living breeds include the Dogue de Bordeaux from France and the Dogo Argentino from Argentina. The Dogo Argentino is used for guarding, big-game hunting, and dog fighting.

Some mastiff-type breeds are now extinct. The Molossus was a dog from Southern Europe during classical antiquity. It was used as a war dog, guard dog, and for big-game hunting.

The Bullenbeisser lived in Germany until World War II. It was used for bull-baiting and bear-baiting. The Dogo Cubano lived in Cuba from the 16th century to the late 19th century. These dogs were used for bull-baiting, dog fighting, and recapturing runaway slaves. Another extinct breed was the Old English Bulldog, which lived in Great Britain and Ireland from the 17th to the 19th century.

Understanding mastiffs helps us see how dog breeds develop. We can see how specific traits, like the brachycephalic muzzle, were used for certain jobs. The history of these dogs is tied to how humans have lived and worked. From guarding property to hunting large animals, mastiffs have been part of human history for millennia. They represent a long lineage of powerful, specialized working animals.
