These dogs are among the biggest dogs in the world. They usually have a short coat of hair.

Most mastiffs have a long tail that sits low on their bodies. They also have very large feet. Their skulls are big and bulky. Their muzzle is broad and short. This short muzzle shape is called brachycephalic. Their ears are pendant-shaped, which means they hang down.

Many different jobs have been given to these dogs.

For a long time, they worked as guard dogs. They helped protect homes and property. In history, people also used them as hunting dogs. Some were even used as war dogs. They were used in blood sports like bull-baiting or bear-baiting. Some were used for lion-baiting as well. This shows how much people relied on their strength. They were built for hard jobs.

We have known about these dogs for a very long time.

Records from Europe and Asia go back 3,000 years. Some old English books call them bandogs. A bandog was a dog kept on a chain called a bande. The chain was released at night. In the United States, people later used the name bandog for certain large dogs. These were mastiff types crossed with bulldogs.

There are many different breeds that people recognize today.

Some living breeds include the English Mastiff from the United Kingdom. The Cane Corso is a guard dog from Italy. In South Africa, there is the Boerboel. The Boxer comes from Germany.

There are also many extinct breeds. The Molossus was a war dog from Southern Europe in ancient times. The Bullenbeisser lived in Germany until World War II. The Dogo Cubano lived in Cuba from the 16th century to the late 19th century.

It is easy to confuse mastiffs with other big dogs.

Some dogs have "mastiff" in their name, like the Spanish Mastiff. Others include the Tibetan Mastiff or the Pyrenean Mastiff. However, these are not considered true mastiffs. They are actually different from the mastiff type. They are more like livestock guardian dogs. Some groups, like the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, call both types molossoid dogs. This helps us see how they are related but still unique.
