These dogs help people find game. There are three main types of gundogs. These are retrievers, flushing dogs, and pointing breeds. Pointers have a very cool instinct. They stop moving and aim their nose at the game. This action is called pointing. It tells the hunter exactly where the game is hiding. This lets the hunter get into the right range.

How these dogs work is quite amazing. They were bred to have a strong pointing instinct. They also have an instinct called backing. These hunting skills often start at two months of age. Some dogs are also called versatile breeds. These dogs can do many different jobs. They can hunt and point to game. They can also retrieve game from land or water. They can even track wounded game.

These dogs have a very long history. Some people believe they came from Spain. They may have come from the Old Spanish Pointer. Long ago, hunters used them to catch game with nets. The dog would freeze or set in place. This helped the hunter throw a net over the game. Other dogs were used by falconers. These dogs would flush game into the air for birds. This helped the hunters work with their raptors.

Many different breeds of pointers exist today. Some have short hair on their bodies. Others have wire hair or silky hair.

Most of these dogs have spots. The spots can be small and round. They can also be large and oval. The American Kennel Club was founded in 1884. They recognized many pointer breeds over the years. They recognized the German Shorthaired Pointer in 1930. They recognized the German Wirehaired Pointer in 1959.

There are many ways to study these dogs. The American Kennel Club started tests in 1986. These tests show how skilled a dog is. The AKC Gun Dog Championships began in 1993. These events include pointers and other breeds. Some breeds, like the German Shorthaired Pointer, are great at retrieving birds. This is useful for duck hunting. Other dogs are bred to work in thick plants. Many of these versatile dogs have docked tails. This helps them work in dense cover.
