These dogs are very gentle and affectionate with people. They are smart and easy to train, which makes them great pets. Many families choose them as companion dogs. Some Golden Retrievers even work as guide dogs to help people. They are among the most popular dog breeds in many Western countries.

This breed was created through careful breeding in Scotland. Sir Dudley Marjoribanks wanted to make the ultimate retrieving dog. He started with a yellow Flat-coated Retriever named Nous.

He mated Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. This produced four yellow pups, including one named Cowslip. Cowslip was then bred with a Red Setter named Sampson. Later, these lines were mixed with Labradors and Bloodhounds. All modern Golden Retrievers come from these specific matings.

History shows how the breed became its own special group. In the early days, they were called "Flat-coated Retriever, Golden." The Kennel Club first recorded them in 1903. By 1911, a breed club was formed in England. They used the name "Yellow or Golden Retriever" at that time. In 1913, the Kennel Club gave them their own separate register. By 1920, the name was simply shortened to Golden Retriever. Winifred Charlesworth helped make the breed famous through dog shows.

Golden Retrievers have a very distinct look and feel.

They have a strong build and a broad head. Their most famous feature is a thick double coat. This coat has a long outer layer and a dense undercoat. The undercoat helps them stay warm and dry in wet weather. Their fur can be cream, yellow, or gold. The color often becomes lighter as the dog grows older. Some show dogs have longer hair than working dogs.

These dogs still love to do the jobs they were bred for. Many enjoy retrieving objects like toys or birds.

They have an excellent sense of smell to help them work. Because they are so calm, they are very tolerant of children. They are often used as therapy dogs to help others. Even though they are large, they are very biddable. This means they have a strong desire to please their owners.
