Dog crossbreed

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A dog crossbreed is a dog made from two or more different breeds.

These dogs are different from canid hybrids. Hybrids are crosses between different species, like a wolf and a dog. Most crossbreeds are not seen as official breeds by big clubs. They do not always look the same as their parents.

Even puppies in the same litter can look very different from each other. This happens because their looks are not as uniform as purebred dogs.

People have used crossbreeding to help dogs do specific jobs for a long time.

In the 14th century, people made working dogs like the lurcher. Lord Orford once crossed Greyhounds with Old English Bulldogs. He wanted to add courage to his dogs. It took six generations to reach his goal.

In the 19th century, breeders made the Mackenzie River husky. They crossed European breeds with Native American dogs. This made a hardy dog for carrying heavy freight.

In the 1980s, new sled racing styles changed things in Scandinavia.

This led to dogs like the eurohound and the greyster. These are crosses using German shorthair pointers and Alaskan huskies or greyhounds. Today, the Alaskan husky is still used for racing.

Another type of cross is the designer dog. This became a fad in the late 20th century. Breeders often cross purebred Poodles with other dogs. They do this to get a coat that is hypoallergenic. This means the hair is less likely to cause allergies.

Designer dogs often have names made from their parents' names.

A Pug and a Beagle make a Puggle. A Schnauzer and a Poodle make a Schnoodle. A Chihuahua and a Poodle make a Chi-poo.

Some crosses are even more complex. A German Chusky comes from a German Shepherd, a Siberian Husky, and a Chow Chow. These dogs are usually bred to be companions or pets. They are often chosen because they look unique or new.

Crossbreeding can affect a dog's health in interesting ways.

Some dogs show crossbreed vigor, also called heterosis. This means they might have certain health advantages. Crossing two purebreds can help avoid some inherited disorders. However, some crosses can still have new health problems. For example, the Puggle can have a specific eye gland issue.

A dog's health always depends on its parents being healthy. Even with these benefits, life expectancy for crossbreeds is often similar to purebred dogs.
