A wolfdog is a hybrid animal. This happens when a domestic dog mates with a wolf.

They can come from many types of wolves. This includes the gray wolf, the eastern wolf, the red wolf, or the Ethiopian wolf. Most wolfdogs are mixes of dogs and gray wolves. This is because dogs and gray wolves are very close in their genes. They have lived in the same areas for thousands of years. These mixes often happen in the wild when wolf numbers go down.

Mixing can happen in many different ways. In the wild, it often occurs near where people live. Wolves are usually aggressive toward dogs. However, a wolf might become playful if it is socially isolated. This can lead to mating between the two species. Scientists also see people making wolfdog breeds on purpose. Some people want a pet that looks exotic. Others want a dog that can do hard jobs. For example, some people breed them for military work.

Humans have been recording these mixes for a long time. The first record in Great Britain was in 1766. A male wolf mated with a dog called a Pomeranian. This resulted in nine pups. In the 1930s, Leendert Saarloos created a new breed. He crossed a male German Shepherd with a female European wolf. He wanted a hardy house dog. The Dutch Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1975.

There are several special breeds of wolfdogs today. The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog was created in the 1950s. It was made from German Shepherds and Carpathian gray wolves. It was used for border patrol in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Today, these dogs help with search and rescue or police work.

Another breed is the Volkosob. Russian border guards wanted a dog with the strength of a wolf. They used German Shepherds and a Caspian Steppe Wolf to make it. In the United States, over 100,000 wolfdogs existed as of 1999.

Wolfdogs even change how other animals look. Scientists found that some wolves have black fur. This color comes from a mutation, which is a small change in genes. This specific change first appeared in domestic dogs. It was passed to wolves through admixture, or mixing. This mutation happened between 13,000 and 120,000 years ago. Some experts believe dogs brought this trait to the New World. This shows how much dogs and wolves are linked together.
