These dogs work in a very specific way. Many hunters do not run with the dogs. Instead, they wait and listen for a sound. The dogs make a loud bark called baying. This baying tells the hunter the prey is in a tree. This behavior is called treeing. The dogs can work alone or in a pack.

Long ago, people brought hounds from Europe to North America. They brought foxhounds from England, Ireland, and France. These old dogs were not good for American hunting. They could not follow animals that climbed trees. The old dogs would get lost or confused. So, breeders made new dogs with better noses. They even used bloodhounds to help the new lines.

Some coonhounds may face health problems. They can get a sickness called ACIP. This can happen from a raccoon bite or scratch. It makes the leg muscles weak. It can also make it hard to breathe. Some dogs also get a skin allergy called atopy. A study of 90,000 dogs found this is common in coonhounds.
