People first brought hunting dogs from Europe to North America. Old dogs were not good at finding animals that climb trees. They would get lost when a raccoon climbed up high.

So, hunters made new dogs. They chose dogs with a keen sense of smell. They wanted dogs that could track animals on the ground and in trees. They even used bloodhounds to help.

There are six main breeds of coonhound. The Black and Tan Coonhound was the first to be registered. The Redbone Coonhound is a solid red color. The Plott Hound is a dark brindle color. It is different because it comes from German dogs. Most coonhounds hunt in a pack. They use a loud bark called baying. This tells the hunter where the prey is.

Some coonhounds can get sick. They may get a condition called ACIP. This can make their leg muscles weak. It can also affect how they breathe. Some dogs also get atopy. This is a type of skin allergy.
