There are three main types of hounds. The first type is the sighthound. These are also called gazehounds. They use their eyes to find prey. These dogs are very fast. They help hunters catch animals like deer or elk. They also chase foxes and hares.

The second type is the scenthound. These dogs use their noses to find things. They follow a scent, which is a smell left behind. Scenthounds can find missing people. They have great endurance. This means they can keep going for a long time. But they are not fast runners.

The third type uses both sight and scent. It is hard to group these dogs. They are not just sighthounds or scenthounds. They use both skills to find prey. Many different breeds fit into these groups. One example is the Beagle.
