Scent hound

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Scent hounds are special hunting dogs. They use their noses to find animals. They do not hunt by sight. Most of these dogs have long, drooping ears. One idea is that these ears help catch smells. The ears keep the scent near the dog's face.

These dogs also have large nasal cavities. These are the big spaces inside the nose. Large spaces help them smell better. Their lips are often loose and moist. This helps them trap scent particles. Many scent hounds have white tips on their tails. This helps a person see the dog in tall grass.

Scent hounds need high endurance. This means they can run for a long time. They must follow smells over rough ground. Some can even follow a scent across running water. They can find a trail that is many days old.

These dogs often make loud sounds. They use a deep voice called baying. This tells the hunter that the dog found a scent. This helps the hunter find the dog from far away.
