The Bloodhound is a large breed of scent hound known for its incredible tracking abilities.

These dogs are famous for their ability to find human scents over very long distances. They can even follow a scent that is several days old. Because of this talent, police and law enforcement agencies use them globally. They help locate escaped prisoners, missing persons, and lost pets. This specialized skill makes them one of the most important working dogs in the world.

Tracking is a specific process that relies on the dog's keen sense of smell and strong instinct.

In medieval times, they often served as "limers" or "lyam hounds." This means they were handled on a leash, known as a "lyam," to find animals like deer or wild boar. The Bloodhound would find the scent before the rest of the hunting pack arrived. They were especially prized for their ability to track the "cold scent" of an animal. This allowed hunters to follow a trail even after the animal had passed through an area a long time ago.

The physical appearance of a Bloodhound is quite distinct.

They are large dogs that typically weigh between 36 and 72 kg. They stand about 58 to 70 cm tall at the withers. Most of their weight is concentrated in a large skeletal structure with very thick bones. Their coat is hard and made entirely of fur. Common colors include black, liver (a dark brown), and red. White markings often appear on the chest or the feet.

Genetics determine the specific color patterns seen in the breed.

Two main genes control how their colors look. One gene decides if the dog is black or liver. If a hound inherits a black allele from a parent, it will have a black nose, eye rims, and paw pads. The second gene determines the coat pattern through the agouti gene. This gene has different variants, such as Ay, As, and at. These variants produce different looks, ranging from a "red" hound with no saddle to a "blanket" type that is mostly dark pigment.

The history of the Bloodhound is tied to ancient legends and European monasteries.

Legend suggests they were first bred around AD 1000 by monks at the Abbey of Saint-Hubert in Belgium. Because of this, they are sometimes called Chien de Saint-Hubert. From about 1200, these monks sent black hounds to the King of France every year. Over time, the original St. Hubert strain changed or disappeared. The modern Bloodhound developed from these early ancestors. Some historians believe their ancestors were brought to England by the Normans, though there is no certain evidence for this.

While they are excellent workers, Bloodhounds have specific health needs.

They have a higher rate of gastrointestinal problems than many other purebred dogs. The most common and dangerous is gastric dilatation volvulus, also called bloat. This condition is a leading cause of death for the breed. A 2004 Kennel Club survey found that bloat caused 34% of deaths. Cancer was the second leading cause at 27%. Additionally, their thick coats mean they can overheat very quickly. A 2024 UK study found their average life expectancy is 9.3 years.

Despite their intense focus on tracking, Bloodhounds have a gentle temperament. They are known to be affectionate and even-tempered with humans. This makes them wonderful pets for many families. However, their strong instinct to follow a scent can make them willful. This can make them somewhat difficult to handle on a leash or to train for obedience. They are a unique blend of a powerful working animal and a kind companion.
