Foxhounds often work in groups called packs. In traditional fox hunting, these packs track quarry across the land. Hunters often follow the dogs on horseback for many miles. Beyond hunting, some foxhounds serve as guards for houses or sheep.

Physically, a foxhound is built for endurance and stamina. They are medium-to-large dogs with short coats. Their bodies feature long, strong legs for running long distances. They also have deep chests to provide extra lung space. This physical structure helps them breathe during intense activity. A foxhound's appearance is quite similar to a large beagle.

Males typically weigh between 29 and 32 kg. Females are slightly smaller, usually weighing 27 to 29 kg. Males also stand taller, measuring 55 to 63 cm. Females usually measure between 53 and 60 cm.

There are several distinct types of foxhounds. Each breed has slightly different characteristics and appearances. Examples include the English Foxhound and the Welsh Foxhound. The Dumfriesshire Black and Tan Foxhound is now extinct. The American Foxhound is the state dog of Virginia.

The American Masters of Foxhounds Association recognizes four specific groups. These include American, Penn-Marydel, English, and crossbred foxhounds. To promote the breed globally, the International Foxhound Association was created in 2012.

Foxhunting has changed significantly throughout history. In many places, the focus has shifted over time. Instead of killing, the goal is often just chasing the animal. Some hunters now chase different creatures, such as coyotes, instead of foxes.

Despite their utility, these dogs are known for a gentle disposition. They are generally affectionate and very sociable animals. Because they are so active, they require constant exercise. They thrive when they are part of a social pack.

History shows that many famous figures have been connected to foxhounds. George Washington bred foxhounds and called his pack the Virginia Hounds. He aimed to create a superior dog that was fast and intelligent. One of his notable dogs was a female named Sweet Lips.

In 1814, the Duke of Leeds gave two Irish foxhounds to Bolton Jackson. These dogs were named Mountain and Muse. Their descendants still hunt in Maryland territories once used by Thomas Jefferson. A dog named Old Drum even inspired the phrase "Man's Best Friend" following an 1870 court case.

In recent years, registration numbers for these dogs have been quite low. In 2005, the American Kennel Club reported very few registrations in North America. The English Foxhound had only 22 registrations that year. The American Foxhound had 44 registrations. To compare, the Labrador Retriever had 137,867 registrations in that same year.

This shows that foxhounds remain a specialized breed rather than a common household pet.

Health is an important consideration for foxhound owners. Common causes of death in puppies include respiratory disease and gastrointestinal disease. Skin disorders, anorexia, and dehydration are also risks.

In 2016 and 2017, a pack of English Foxhounds in southern England faced a tuberculosis outbreak. This outbreak impacted 180 dogs ranging from puppies to eight-year-olds. Investigators looked into the dogs' raw meat diet and regional factors. They studied if the meat contained M. bovis, which causes tuberculosis. This event highlights how environmental factors and diet can impact the health of a working pack.
