The Greyhound is an ancient breed of dog classified as a sighthound.

Sighthounds are dogs that hunt primarily by using their vision and extreme speed. Historically, Greyhounds were developed to hunt game through sight and velocity. In more recent times, they have been used for organized coursing and professional racing. Today, many Greyhounds serve as show dogs or gentle companion animals in many homes. They are known for a distinctive, flexible, "S-shaped" outline that is characteristic of their group.

To achieve such high speeds, the Greyhound possesses a specialized physical build. They have long legs, a deep chest, and a very flexible spine. Their body is slim and highly muscular, which helps them sprint effectively. Males are typically tall at the withers and weigh an average of 65 to 75 pounds. Females are generally smaller, with shoulder heights between 26 and 28 inches and weights between 45 and 65 pounds. Their fur is very short and easy to maintain. There are approximately 30 recognized color forms, including white, brindle, fawn, black, red, and blue.

The Greyhound's incredible speed is the result of a unique physiological mechanism. They utilize a running gait called a double suspension rotary gallop. During this gait, all four feet leave the ground during two different phases: the contracted phase and the extended phase. This movement is supported by an extremely flexible spine. Their large hearts and high red blood cell counts also contribute to their performance. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the muscles, and having more of them allows the hound to move oxygen faster. Additionally, they possess the highest percentage of Type IIa muscle fibers among all breeds. These are oxidative-glycolytic fast-twitch muscle fibers that allow for both speed and endurance.

Because of their unique biology, Greyhounds require specialized veterinary care. Their livers contain lower amounts of oxidative enzymes than other dogs. This means they cannot metabolize barbiturate-based anesthesia in the same way as other breeds. They also have unusual blood chemistry that can lead to misdiagnosis if a vet is not familiar with the breed. One specific concern is greyhound fibrinolytic syndrome, also known as breed-associated hyperfibrinolysis. This is a disorder of the fibrinolysis system that can cause delayed bleeding 36 to 48 hours after surgery or trauma. While they have high red blood cell counts, they have lower levels of platelets than other breeds.

Greyhounds also have specific sensitivities to their environment and certain chemicals. They are very sensitive to insecticides, particularly those that are pyrethrin-based. Owners should use safe products like Frontline or Advantage to control fleas and ticks. Because they lack an undercoat and have very little body fat, they are susceptible to extreme temperatures. They must be housed indoors to protect them from both heat and cold. Regarding their lifespan, a 2024 UK study found an average life expectancy of 11.5 years. This is slightly lower than the 12.7-year average for purebred dogs. A 2005 Swedish study noted that 60% of Greyhounds died by age 10, compared to 35% of other dogs.

The history of the Greyhound stretches back thousands of years.

Evidence of greyhound-like dogs appears in Turkish drawings from 6000 BC. Findings in Iran date to 4200 BC, and skeletal remains in Syria are roughly 4,000 years old. Some historical literature mentions the "vertragus," which may be an early European sighthound related to the Greyhound. These dogs have been celebrated in Western art and literature for centuries as noble hunters.

They have appeared in famous paintings and even ancient Roman bronze figures.

In terms of temperament, Greyhounds are generally gentle and affectionate. A 2008 University of Pennsylvania study found they are one of the least aggressive breeds toward strangers or other dogs. They are often described as "Velcro dogs" because they enjoy human contact and follow owners from room to room. While they are usually quiet and rarely bark, they may exhibit prey-driven behavior toward small animals like cats. They are excellent pets for families, provided children are taught to treat them with respect. Many retired racing Greyhounds are now finding new lives through international adoption programs.
