Greyhound racing is an organized, competitive sport. It features greyhounds racing on dedicated tracks.

People participate in this sport through professional competition or amateur levels. In many regions, it functions as a major commercial gambling industry. This industry often involves parimutuel betting. In parimutuel betting, people wager on the outcomes of the races. This system is similar to the one used in horse racing. The sport is defined by the incredible speed of the dogs.

The mechanism of the race relies on a specialized device. Instead of chasing live animals, dogs chase a mechanical hare. This is also known as an artificial lure. The lure is usually a form of windsock. It travels along a metal rail ahead of the dogs.

This device keeps the dogs running at high speeds along the track. The mechanical lure allows the sport to function in a controlled environment. This method was a major shift from the older tradition of hare coursing. It ensures the dogs follow a specific, predictable path during the competition.

Modern racing differs significantly from its predecessor, hare coursing. In the past, dogs chased live jack rabbits. Owen Patrick Smith changed this in 1912 by inventing the mechanical hare. Smith had altruistic aims for this invention. He wanted to stop the killing of jack rabbits. He envisioned greyhound racing becoming similar to horse racing.

Smith opened the first professional track in Emeryville, California. The original Emeryville arena was demolished in February 1920. A modern racetrack using the "automatic rabbit" replaced it. The first race at this new park occurred on May 29, 1920.

The sport spread to Great Britain in 1926. American promoter Charles Munn introduced the oval tracks there. He worked with a coursing judge named Major Leslie Lyne Dixson. They struggled to find supporters at first. They eventually met Brigadier-General Critchley and Sir William Gentle. Together, they raised £22,000 to launch the Greyhound Racing Association. The industry grew rapidly in the United Kingdom. By the end of 1927, forty tracks were operating. The sport became very popular among the working class. They enjoyed the urban locations and evening meeting times.

Today, the global landscape of greyhound racing is changing. Many jurisdictions are implementing bans due to animal welfare concerns. These concerns include injury rates and breeding practices. They also involve the euthanasia of uncompetitive dogs. Australia is described as the world's largest commercial industry. However, the Australian Capital Territory banned racing in 2018. Tasmania passed legislation to phase out racing by 2029. In Argentina, racing ended in November 2016. Law 27.330 prohibited the promotion of dog races there. New Zealand also announced a ban in December 2024. This ban includes a 20-month period for rehoming 2,900 dogs.

Different countries have unique histories with the sport. In China, racing occurred at the Canidrome in Macau. Australia was a primary supplier of dogs to Macau. When the Macau facility closed, 533 greyhounds were abandoned. In India, racing was regulated in the 1930s and 1940s. Recent reports from 2024 to 2026 mention rural races in Punjab. However, the Animal Welfare Board of India issued an advisory in 2025. They stated that greyhound racing is illegal under existing Indian law. In the United States, only two tracks remain in West Virginia as of 2025. Federal legislation was introduced in 2025 to prohibit commercial racing nationwide.

When a dog's racing career ends, specific steps are taken. Most dogs retire between the ages of four and six. This happens when they are no longer competitive. Some dogs are kept as stud dogs or brood bitches. Many others are rehomed into new lives. To manage these dogs, officials use identification methods.

Dogs may have ear tattoos for identification. They also use microchips to track the animals. These systems help ensure the dogs can be traced. This connects the sporting industry to broader discussions of animal welfare and regulation.
