Dog agility is an exciting sport for dogs and their handlers.

In this race, a person directs a dog through a special obstacle course. The goal is to be both very fast and very accurate. Dogs run without any food or toys to help them. Instead, they listen to voice commands and watch the handler's body signals.

This requires a lot of training and careful coordination between the dog and the person. The handler must use their arms, shoulders, and feet to guide the dog. Success depends on how well the team works together as one.

A course is made of many different obstacles arranged in a specific order.

Some are contact obstacles, like the A-frame, which is two ramps that meet in the middle. There is also a seesaw, sometimes called a teeter-totter, that the dog must walk across.

Dogs might run through tunnels or jump through a tire jump. Some even master weave poles, which are 5 to 12 upright poles.

The dog must weave through them without skipping any. Other jumps include hurdles with horizontal bars or solid panel jumps.

Before the competition starts, handlers get a short walk-through.

This usually lasts about 8 minutes. During this time, handlers walk the course without their dogs to plan a strategy. They look for tricky turns, like U-turns or 270-degree turns. They might even use a course map to see where every obstacle goes.

These maps use icons and numbers to show the correct path. Planning is vital because the course can be very complicated. A good plan helps the team find the fastest and most accurate way to finish.

This sport has a very interesting history.

It began with a demonstration at the Crufts dog show in the United Kingdom. This happened in the late 1970s. At first, dogs ran the course during intermission to entertain the audience. Since then, it has grown into a huge international sport.

Today, many different groups run competitions all over the world. Some groups, like the FCI, hold world championships for pedigree dogs. Other groups, like the IFCS, allow any kind of dog to compete.

Agility connects people and dogs through teamwork and skill.

It is not just about how fast a dog can run. It is also about how well they listen and follow directions. Even the handler must run hard to keep up with the dog.

Scoring is based on faults, such as knocking down a jump bar. There are also time faults if the team is too slow. Whether it is a small dog or a large one, agility brings joy to many people.
