Instead of working alone, gymnasts perform in partnerships. These partners work together to do flips, tumbling, and dance moves. They set their whole routine to music. Every move must match the style and beat of the songs. It is a way to show both strength and grace at the same time. This sport is governed by a group called World Gymnastics.

Teams work in different ways depending on their size. You might see a pair of two gymnasts working together. You might also see groups of three women or four men.

Within these groups, everyone has a special job. The bases are the strong gymnasts who provide support. The tops are usually smaller gymnasts who balance or fly. In some groups, there are also middles. These gymnasts act like extra bases to help support the top.

There are three main ways to perform a routine. A balance routine focuses on poise and flexibility. In these moves, gymnasts build human pyramids and hold still poses. A dynamic routine is all about power and flight. In these, the bases throw the top high into the air. The top performs somersaults or twists before being caught. A combined routine uses both of these styles together. These routines are often performed by senior gymnasts.

This sport has a very long history. People have practiced acrobatics for thousands of years in festivals and circuses. The first time it was used as a specific sport was in the Soviet Union during the 1930s. The first men's competition happened in 1939. A women's event was added just one year later in 1940. In 1957, countries like Poland and Bulgaria joined an international competition. The first world championships were held in 1974. It was even seen during the London 2012 Olympics.

Judges watch very closely to give scores. They look at three main things: difficulty, artistry, and execution. Difficulty is how hard the moves are. Artistry is how well the gymnasts use the music and the floor. Execution is how perfectly the moves are actually done. Judges take points away for mistakes. For example, a top loses one point if they fall instead of being caught. Gymnasts use safety mats and harnesses when they learn new moves.
