Partners work together to do flips and dance. They perform these moves to music. The routines show great skill and strength.

Teams can be pairs or groups. In a group, there are three women or four men.

Gymnasts have different roles. Bases are strong people who support others. Tops are usually smaller gymnasts. They balance on the bases or fly through the air. In some groups, there are also middles. These gymnasts help support the top.

There are three main types of routines. A balance routine uses strength and poise. Gymnasts make towers or pyramids. They must hold poses for a short time. A dynamic routine uses power. Bases throw the top into the air for somersaults. The bases must catch them safely. A combined routine uses both of these styles.

Judges give scores for difficulty and artistry. They also look at execution. Execution means how perfect the moves look. If a gymnast makes a mistake, they lose points. For example, a top might lose a point if they fall instead of being caught.
