This group makes sure all gymnastics competitions follow the same rules. They use a special book called the Code of Points. This book helps judges decide how to score each performance. The group also sets rules for how old a gymnast must be. These age rules are meant to protect young athletes.

It is a very important job for the sport.

There are many different ways to do gymnastics. The group looks after seven main kinds of the sport. Some people do artistic gymnastics, which has men's and women's versions. Others enjoy rhythmic, aerobic, or acrobatic gymnastics. You can also see athletes doing trampolining or tumbling. There is even parkour included in the group. Each style requires different skills and moves to perform well.

This organization has a very long history. It began on 23 July 1881 in Liège, Belgium. At first, it was called the European Federation of Gymnastics. Only three countries belonged to it: Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. In 1921, other countries joined the group. It then changed its name to the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique. In December 2025, it took its current name, World Gymnastics.

Today, the group has many members and leaders. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2023, there were 161 national federations in the group. These nations work through five continental unions. These unions cover Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. More than 30,000 athletes take part in their events. About 70% of these athletes are female. The group is led by a president and many committees.

World Gymnastics organizes many famous contests around the world. They help run the Olympic Games and the Youth Olympic Games. They also host the World Gymnastics Championships for different styles. You can see athletes compete in World Cup series and World Challenge Cups. They even have special events for junior gymnasts. These contests allow athletes to show their hard work and skill. It is a way for the whole world to celebrate gymnastics together.
