Aerobatics is the exciting art of flying an aircraft in unusual ways.

The name is a mix of the words aeroplane and acrobatics. Pilots perform these moves for many reasons. Some do it for recreation or pure fun. Others use it as a judged sport in competitions. Training with aerobatics also helps pilots stay safe. It teaches them how to recover from hard flying conditions.

Flying these moves requires many special skills. Pilots often rotate the plane around different axes. They might roll the aircraft or change its pitch. Some moves, like a spin, use a vertical axis called yaw. These maneuvers can be combined into a long sequence. This sequence can be for a show or a contest. Aerobatic flying puts a lot of stress on the plane. Because of this, some pilots wear a parachute for safety.

This practice has a long and interesting history. In the early days of flight, pilots joined flying circuses. They flew to entertain people or create art. These shows often made onlookers gasp in surprise. Later, people found these moves useful for combat. Pilots used them to gain an advantage in dogfights. Some famous moves, like the Immelmann turn, were made in military conflicts.

There are different types of aircraft used for these stunts. Specialist planes like the Pitts Special or Extra 300 are built only for performance. These planes are not meant for carrying luggage or touring. Other planes, like the Cessna 152 Aerobat, can do both. Some teams fly in large groups called formations. Most teams fly with four to ten aircraft. A record of 22 aircraft flying together was set in 1958.

Teams often use colored smoke to show their paths. This smoke is made by turning fog oil into a fine mist.

Pilots can compete in many different levels around the world. The FAI Aerobatics Commission manages these competitions. Pilots start at the Primary or Graduate level. They can move up to Sportsman, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. The very best pilots reach the Unlimited level. These expert pilots feel very strong forces called g-forces. Some pilots feel up to +8 or -6 g. If a pilot feels +9 g for too long, they might lose consciousness.
