Calisthenics

sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Calisthenics is a special way to build strength and fitness. It uses your own body weight as resistance to move your joints. Most of these moves do not need any heavy tools or gym machines. You can do them in many different places. This makes the practice very easy to start anywhere. It is great for building balance and coordination too.

There are many ways to perform these exercises. A push-up is a common starting point for many people. You lie face down and use your arms to lift your body. Squats are another great move for your legs. You stand with your feet apart and bend your knees.

Some moves are much harder and take a long time to learn. A planche is an advanced skill where you balance on your arms.

You can even do pull-ups by grabbing a bar and pulling yourself up.

The history of these moves goes back a very long time. The word comes from two ancient Greek words. One word means beauty and the other means strength. People in ancient Greece used these exercises for training. Even the famous Spartans used them at the Battle of Thermopylae. In ancient China, doctors also used them. They prescribed these moves to help people stay healthy.

Different goals can change how you practice calisthenics. If you want more muscle, you focus on increasing your load volume. If you want more strength, you increase the intensity. Some people practice "statics" to master difficult holds. These include moves like the human flag or the back lever.

You can also do "co-operative" moves with a partner. One example is the fireman's carry.

Calisthenics is helpful for people of all different ages. It is not just for young athletes. Older adults can use these moves to help their bones and muscles. It can also help them improve their sleep. Doing exercises like lunges can help prevent falls in older people. These moves mimic the ways we move in our daily lives. This makes the training very useful for everyone.
