Strength training is a special way to exercise to make your body stronger.

You can do this by lifting weights or using your own bodyweight. Some people do push-ups, pull-ups, or squats to build muscle. You might also try isometrics, which means holding a still position under tension. Another way is plyometrics, which uses fast, explosive movements like jump squats. This kind of exercise can make your muscles, tendons, and ligaments stronger. It can also help increase your bone density and your metabolism.

To get stronger, your muscles need to work against resistance. You do this by contracting your muscles against a heavy weight. Then, you return to your starting position to do it again. This is called a repetition. You repeat these until your muscles reach a point called failure. A key rule is progressive overload, which means adding more resistance over time. This helps your muscles grow larger and stronger as they adapt. Beginners also train their brains to send better signals to their muscles.

Doing the movements the right way is called using good form. You must use the correct muscle group for each move. Some people try to "cheat" by moving weight to other body parts. While advanced lifters might do this to break through a plateau, it can be risky. Using poor form can lead to injuries like strains or even fractures. It can also stop you from reaching your training goals. If the muscle is not challenged enough, it will not grow. Always focus on perfect technique to stay safe and healthy.

Before you start lifting, it is smart to warm up. The National Strength and Conditioning Association recommends this practice. A warm-up might include light biking or stretching your joints. You can also use heat pads or take a hot shower. Some people practice the exact move they plan to do without weights. This helps blood flow to your muscles so you have more stamina. Warming up can also make your exercises more effective. However, you should be careful with static stretching before you lift.

Breathing is another important part of a good workout. Most people inhale when lowering a weight and exhale when lifting it. This helps you get enough oxygen and keeps your blood pressure steady. Some very strong powerlifters use the Valsalva maneuver instead. This involves taking a deep breath and holding it while bracing your core. This helps keep the torso steady and protects the spine. However, this can raise blood pressure, so it must be done carefully. Managing your breathing helps you lift heavy weights safely and effectively.
