Strength training is a form of exercise designed to improve physical strength. It is also known as weight training or resistance training.

This activity can involve lifting weights or using bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, and squats. It also includes isometrics, which means holding a position under tension like a plank. Another method is plyometrics, which uses explosive movements like box jumps. Strength training is primarily an anaerobic activity. However, circuit training can also be a form of aerobic exercise.

Training works by progressively increasing the force output of the muscles. The fundamental principle involves repeatedly overloading a specific muscle group. This is done by contracting muscles against heavy resistance. The lifter then returns to the starting position. This process is repeated for several repetitions. This continues until the muscles reach a point of failure. A key concept is progressive overload. This means muscles face gradually increasing resistance over time. This stimulates adaptation and growth. The muscles respond by growing larger and stronger.

There are different ways to use training volume to reach specific goals. Volume is calculated as sets multiplied by repetitions multiplied by load.

For strength development, efficiency is maximized using heavy loads. These are typically 80% to 100% of a person's one-repetition maximum, or 1RM. This usually involves only 1 to 5 repetitions per set. For muscle growth, also called hypertrophy, loads of 30% of 1RM or greater can be used. The NSCA recommends medium loads of 8 to 12 repetitions at 60% to 80% of 1RM. For endurance, people perform many repetitions, such as 15 or more per set. The NSCA suggests light loads below 60% of 1RM for this goal.

Movement tempo refers to the speed of each repetition. This is often expressed using a four-number tempo code. For example, a code of 3/1/4/2 describes the phases of a movement. The first number is the eccentric phase, or the lowering part. The second number is a pause. The third number is the concentric phase, or the lifting part. The fourth number is another pause.

A code might use the letter X for explosive actions. It might use the letter V to mean the person moves at their own pace. Intentionally slowing the tempo can increase muscle activation. However, it also decreases the maximum load a person can lift.

Proper form is essential for safety and success. Good form means performing movements with the appropriate muscle group. Some people use "cheating" to move more weight. This means transferring the weight to different body parts. While advanced lifters may use this to break through plateaus, it can be risky. Poor form can lead to injuries like strains or fractures. It can also prevent a person from reaching their training objectives. If the target muscle is not challenged, the threshold of overload is never reached. Correct form improves strength, muscle tone, and weight maintenance.

Preparation and breathing are also vital components of a workout. The NSCA recommends warming up before training. A warm-up might include a "pulse raiser" like light stationary biking. It can also include joint mobility exercises or dynamic stretching. Dynamic warm-ups performed at greater than 20% effort can enhance power. Breathing helps meet the increased oxygen requirements of the body. Many people inhale when lowering the weight and exhale when lifting it. This protects against passing out and high blood pressure.

Powerlifters may use the Valsalva maneuver. This involves inhaling deeply and bracing the abdominal muscles. This increases pressure to protect the spine during very heavy lifts.

Strength training offers many benefits for the human body. It can increase the strength of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It can also increase bone density and metabolism. It may improve the lactate threshold and cardiac function. These benefits help reduce the risk of injury for athletes and the elderly. Strength training is often a central part of many sports regimens. It is a complex system of biology, physics, and careful practice. By managing rest periods and frequency, people can continue to see progress.
