Weightlifting is the practice of lifting weights to challenge the human body.

People use various tools to perform these exercises. These include free weights, such as dumbbells, barbells, and kettlebells. They also use weight machines found in gyms or leisure centres. People engage in weightlifting for many distinct reasons. Some seek to develop physical strength or improve general fitness. Others compete in specialized weightlifting sports. Some people use it for bodybuilding to create a specific muscular appearance.

To change the body, lifters use two primary methods: hypertrophy and overload. Hypertrophy training focuses on increasing muscle size. This is often achieved by using lighter weights with a higher volume of repetitions. This process triggers sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, which leads to larger, more visible muscle mass. This type of growth is highly favored by bodybuilders. In contrast, the overload method focuses on building raw strength. This involves training with increasing weights at each set. Lifting very heavy weights with a lower volume of repetitions is the most effective way to build strength. This creates myofibrillar hypertrophy, which builds athletic power.

Weightlifting sports are categorized by the objects lifted and the specific movements performed. Olympic weightlifting is a specific sport practiced at the Olympic Games. It features two main movements known as the "olympic lifts." The first is the snatch, a wide-grip lift where the barbell moves overhead in one motion. The second is the clean and jerk. In this lift, the weight moves from the ground to the shoulders, known as the clean, and then to an overhead position via a jerk.

Another major sport is powerlifting. This sport became standardized in the 1970s. It consists of three specific lifts: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. There are also other forms, such as kettlebell lifting and stone lifting.

History shows that feats of strength have existed since before written records. Many ancient civilizations told stories of heroes with immense power. In Ancient China and Greece, men lifted stones to prove their strength. In Scotland, Highland Gatherings have hosted weightlifting contests since the 1820s. These contests served as early versions of modern strength athletics. The modern Olympic Games included weightlifting at their start in 1896. Since 1920, weightlifting has been a regular Olympic event. The International Weightlifting Federation was founded in 1905 to govern the sport. Later, the International Powerlifting Federation was formed in 1972 to regulate powerlifting.

Weightlifting provides many physiological benefits for the human body. It induces the production of collagen proteins. These proteins help build the structure of tendons and ligaments. This process is vital for improving joint stability. Lifting weights can also increase a person's metabolism. This increases the resting metabolic rate, meaning the body burns calories faster. This allows the body to use those calories to build muscle mass. Research shows that using free weights can improve muscle function more than machines in high-functioning older adults.

Different goals lead to very different physical body types. Powerlifters and Olympic weightlifters often develop endo-mesomorphic bodies. Bodybuilders tend to have more mesomorphic physiques. This is because bodybuilding focuses on aesthetic appearance through sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. Because the goal is a specific look, the training differs from pure strength training. It is also important to manage risks. A study found that 64.8% of weightlifting injuries occur in the back, knees, or shoulders. Proper management and prevention are crucial for all lifters.

Social trends have also shaped how people approach weightlifting. Historically, weightlifting for health and appearance was more common among men. This was partly because some women feared looking too masculine. Some women also felt uncomfortable in male-dominated gym spaces. However, these trends are changing in recent times. The practice of bodybuilding has become more feminized. Some gyms now report that over 50% of their clients are women. Many women now choose weightlifting over cardio for empowerment and enjoyment. This shows how weightlifting continues to evolve as a tool for health and identity.
