arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Aerobics is a special way to exercise the body. It combines rhythmic movement with stretching and strength training. People do these routines to improve many parts of fitness. They want to build muscular strength and better cardio-vascular fitness. This helps the heart and lungs work well. It also helps people stay flexible. Many people enjoy doing these routines in groups. A fitness professional, called an instructor, leads the way.

Most formal classes follow a specific order. First, there is a warm-up for 5 to 10 minutes. Next comes cardiovascular conditioning for 25 to 30 minutes. This is the part that builds heart health. After that, people do 10 to 15 minutes of strength training. Then, they cool down for 5 to 8 minutes. Finally, they finish with 5 to 8 minutes of stretching.

This way of moving has an interesting history. Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper and Col. Pauline Potts developed the method. They both worked for the United States Air Force. Dr. Cooper was an exercise enthusiast. He wondered why some strong people struggled with long runs or swims. In 1968, he published a book called Aerobics. Later, in 1979, he published The New Aerobics.

Many people helped make aerobics famous. Jacki Sorensen invented aerobic dancing in 1969. She spread her method across the U.S. in the 1970s. In 1982, Jane Fonda released a workout video. This video helped aerobics become popular all over the world. Some people also use a tool called a step. This is a low platform used in step aerobics.

There are many different ways to practice. Some people do aerobic dances to popular music. Others try sport aerobics, which is a competitive sport. In sport aerobics, people are judged on their balance and kicks. They must perform ten mandatory exercises. These include four high leg kicks in a row. It is a way to show great skill and creativity.
