People swim for many reasons, such as for fun, sport, or exercise. It is also a way to stay alive if you are in deep water. To move, you must coordinate your arms and legs to create thrust. This thrust helps you move in a specific direction. Swimming is a whole body exercise that builds endurance and skill. It is a popular activity for people of all ages and fitness levels.

To swim well, you use different movements called strokes. There are four main strokes used in competitions. These are the front crawl, the breaststroke, the backstroke, and the butterfly. The front crawl, also called freestyle, is the fastest stroke.

Some people use a sidestroke, which was common in the late 1800s. This stroke involves moving one arm above the water at a time. Swimmers can also use tools like goggles, fins, or snorkels to help them.

Ancient stories like the Epic of Gilgamesh also mention swimming. In the year 450 BCE, a writer named Herodotus wrote about people who could not swim. Long ago, the Batavi tribe was known for swimming across rivers in full armor. In 1538, a professor named Nikolaus Wynmann wrote the first complete book about swimming.

The butterfly stroke is a newer style. It was created in the 1930s but became its own style in 1953. Many people swim to stay healthy and strong. Swimming helps the heart and builds muscle strength. Because water supports your weight, it is a low-impact activity. This makes it easier on your joints than running.

Science shows that our bodies can float in water. This happens because our bodies are less dense than the water around us.

Saltier water can actually make it easier to float. Even tiny babies have a natural reflex to hold their breath underwater. This reflex helps them stay safe for a short time. Some people enjoy swimming in pools, while others like "wild swimming" in lakes or the sea.
