Swimming

Swimming is the act of a person propelling themselves through water. People engage in this activity for many reasons, including recreation, sport, exercise, or survival. It is a whole-body exercise that requires significant skill and endurance. To move effectively, a swimmer must coordinate their limb and body movements. This coordination creates a balance of buoyancy and hydrodynamic thrust. This thrust results in directional motion through the water.

The science of swimming relies heavily on the concept of buoyancy. On average, the human body has a relative density of 0.98 compared to water. This lower density allows the body to float. However, several factors can change how well a person floats. Body composition, lung inflation, and muscle or fat content all play a role. For example, higher levels of body fat increase buoyancy. Saltier water also lowers relative density and makes it easier to float. Because they often have higher muscle content and lower centers of gravity, human males may find it more difficult to be buoyant.

To move quickly, swimmers must master hydrodynamics. Hydrodynamics is the study of how liquids move around objects. Water creates resistance, which can be used for propulsion or act as drag. Drag is a force that slows an object down. To swim faster, a person must either increase their power or reduce water resistance. Interestingly, power must increase by a factor of three to match the effect of reducing resistance. Efficient swimmers use a horizontal position to reduce drag. They also roll their bodies and extend their arms to minimize wave resistance.

Competitive swimming uses specific repeated motions called strokes. There are four main strokes used in modern competitions. The front crawl, also known as freestyle, is considered the fastest stroke. The breaststroke is another primary style. The backstroke is performed while lying on the back. Finally, the butterfly is a distinct, powerful stroke. The butterfly was developed in the 1930s. It was originally seen as a variant of the breaststroke. It was not recognized as a separate style until 1953. Other styles, like the sidestroke, are used for lifesaving or recreation.

Swimming has a very long history in human culture. Records of swimming date back to Stone Age paintings from 7,000 years ago. Written references appear as early as 2000 BCE in texts like the Epic of Gilgamesh. In 450 BCE, the writer Herodotus recorded a failed expedition due to swimming failures. The Batavi tribe was famously known for swimming across the Rhine in full armor. In 1538, Nikolaus Wynmann wrote the first complete book on the subject. Competitive swimming in Europe began around 1800. The sport was eventually included in the first modern Summer Olympics in 1896 in Athens, Greece.

Swimming offers many specific health benefits. It is a cardiovascular exercise that requires a constant oxygen supply. This helps strengthen the heart and improve muscle strength. Because water supports the body's weight, it is a low-impact activity. This makes it ideal for people with arthritis or joint injuries. However, swimming may not help with bone mass acquisition as much as other sports. This can be an important factor for adolescent athletes. Beyond physical health, swimming can improve mood and mental well-being. A 2025 study suggested that outdoor swimming is linked to higher well-being.

While swimming is beneficial, it also carries certain risks. The aquatic environment can be dangerous if a swimmer experiences panic or exhaustion. These can lead to drowning. There is also the risk of infection or encounters with hostile aquatic fauna. To stay safe, many facilities employ lifeguards to watch for distress. Swimmers may use various tools to assist them. These include goggles, snorkels, and fins. Some may even use flotation devices. Even infants show an innate diving reflex. This reflex includes apnea, which is holding one's breath, and a slowed heart rate.
