Anaerobic exercise is a special way the body moves. The word anaerobic means "without oxygen."

This type of work is very intense. It usually lasts for a short time. You might do fast sprints or lift heavy weights.

These workouts help people build muscle strength and power. They can also help with losing weight and heart health. This kind of movement is different from walking or jogging.

Your body has a way to make energy called glycolysis. This process breaks down glucose to make ATP. ATP is the main source of energy for your cells.

This happens when your body needs power very fast. It happens when the need for energy is higher than what oxygen can provide. This process creates a byproduct called lactic acid. This buildup can happen during very hard work. It is a natural part of how we use energy.

There are two main ways the body uses anaerobic systems. The first is the alactic anaerobic system. This uses high energy phosphates like ATP and creatine phosphate. It is used for activities lasting up to thirty seconds.

The second way is the lactic anaerobic system. This uses anaerobic glycolysis to turn glucose into energy. After thirty seconds, the body uses both systems. This helps the muscles keep working during intense tasks.

These exercises use your fast twitch muscles. These muscles are built for quick and powerful moves. Intense exercise can last for more than four minutes. An example is a one-mile race. You can also try high-intensity interval training, or HIIT. This is a strategy where you work at over 90% of your maximum heart rate.

Scientists find it hard to measure this energy exactly. They sometimes measure lactic acid in the muscle mass instead.

It is helpful to know how this connects to other exercise. Aerobic exercise is the opposite of anaerobic exercise. Aerobic moves like cycling or rowing use oxygen for long periods.

Your aerobic system helps you recover between hard bursts. It replenishes and stores energy for the next move. Many sports require both systems to work together. Training both helps you build endurance and strength. This keeps your body ready for many different kinds of play.
