A toy dog is a very small dog.

This term usually refers to a small breed or a group of small breeds. These dogs can come from many different types. Some are spaniels, pinschers, or terriers. People bred these dogs to be much smaller than their ancestors. Not every toy dog is a lap dog. Some are just very small versions of hunting or working dogs.

Tiny dogs are sometimes called teacup dogs.

Small dogs have had many different jobs in the past. Some were kept as symbols of wealth. Others worked as watchdogs to guard things. Some even helped people by attracting fleas away from their owners.

Today, many of these small dogs are kept as pets. They are often chosen because they are a convenient size. Some people like them because they are easy to keep close. They can be active or very calm.

Many dog clubs use the word "Toy" to group these breeds.

This name is mostly used for dog shows. The Kennel Club in the UK uses this name. The Canadian Kennel Club also uses it. The American Kennel Club and the Australian National Kennel Council use it too. The New Zealand Kennel Club uses it as well. These clubs might not all put the same breeds in the Toy group. However, they use the name to organize their lists.

Different clubs have different rules for naming.

The United Kennel Club in the US does not have a Toy group. They put small dogs with larger dogs of the same type. They also have a group called "Companion Dogs." The American Kennel Club once debated changing their name to "Companion." They wanted to show that dogs are not just playthings. Some people resisted this change because they liked the old name. This shows how much people care about dog traditions.

There are many famous breeds in the toy group.

The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular. The Chinese Crested Dog is a hairless breed. You might also see a Chihuahua or a Papillon. The Japanese Chin and the Toy Poodle are also common. Other breeds include the Pug, Maltese, and Pekingese. Some new or rare breeds are still being developed by breeders. These new dogs might not be in the big club lists yet.
