The Chihuahua is a tiny dog from Mexico. It is the smallest recognized dog breed in the world.

Most people keep them as companion animals. They are very popular pets across the globe. These dogs are known for being very small. Their compact size makes them easy to keep in homes. They are famous for their unique looks and big personalities.

Chihuahuas have a very specific way they look. Many have an apple-shaped skull, which means their heads are round.

They often have large, round eyes and big, upright ears. Some dogs have a soft spot on their head called a molera. This is much like the soft spot found on human babies. Their coats can be short or long. You can find them in many colors and patterns, including splashed patterns.

These dogs have a very interesting history. Most modern dog breeds come from Europe. However, Chihuahuas have a link to ancient dogs from the Americas.

Scientists found that these native dogs arrived from Siberia 10,000 years ago. They were separated from other dogs for about 9,000 years. A 2020 study showed they have about 4% of this old DNA. This makes them different from many other modern breeds.

Formal records for the breed started in the early 20th century.

In 1904, the American Kennel Club registered its first Chihuahua. That dog was named Midget and belonged to H. Raynor of Texas. Only five Chihuahuas were registered in that first year. Some older records from the 16th century mention small dogs in the Chihuahua region. These tiny dogs were sometimes used to hunt small animals like mice and lizards.

Because they are so small, Chihuahuas have special needs. They can suffer from hypoglycemia, which is when blood sugar gets too low.

This happens because their bodies use energy very quickly. They may also face other health challenges like heart issues or deafness. Chihuahuas can sometimes be feisty with people or other dogs. For this reason, they might not be the best fit for homes with very young children. They are small, but they have big spirits.
