The Chihuahua is a tiny dog from Mexico. It is the smallest dog breed in the world. These dogs are often kept as friends for people. They are very popular pets.

Chihuahuas have many looks. They can have short hair or long hair. Their colors and patterns can be almost anything. Some have patches of color on their coats. Most have a round skull. People call this an apple-shaped head. They also have large, round eyes and big, upright ears. Some have a soft spot on their head called a molera. This is like the soft spot on a human baby.

These dogs have a special history. Most modern dogs come from Europe. But Chihuahuas have links to old dogs from America. DNA studies show they have a small amount of this old ancestry.

Chihuahuas are very small. This can lead to health issues. They can get hypoglycemia. This is when their blood sugar gets too low. This happens because they use power very fast. Because they are so small, they can be feisty. Some may act tough toward people or other dogs. They might not be the best choice for homes with small children.
