They first appeared in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century. These dogs came from cross-breeding small dogs from England. They also came from local Parisian ratters. These dogs have a flat face. This is called brachycephaly. It means their snout is very short.

Because of their flat faces, they may have trouble breathing. They may also have a hard time staying cool. They use panting to lower their body heat.

French Bulldogs have many different looks. Their coats are short and silky. Most are brindle or fawn colored. Some are white with brindle patches. This pattern is called pied. They have large heads and square shapes. Their ears are a special type. They are called bat ears because they stand up. These dogs are very popular today. In 2024, they were the most popular breed in America. They are loved by many people as companions.
