French Bulldog

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The French Bulldog is a small companion dog breed. It is highly valued as a toy dog for friendship. Today, this breed is one of the most popular in the world. In 2024, the American Kennel Club ranked it as the most popular breed in the United States. This is a massive change from 2003, when it was only 54th.

In the United Kingdom, the breed saw 33,661 registrations in 2019. This made it more common than the Cocker Spaniel, though less common than the Labrador Retriever at that time.

The physical appearance of the French Bulldog is very specific. They are muscular dogs with a short, fine, and silky coat. Their weight is usually under 28 pounds. The breed is known for having a large, square head and wrinkles in the skin.

Their most famous feature is the "bat ear," which stands up straight. They also have dark eyes that are almost black. Blue eyes are not approved by the American Kennel Club. Common colors include brindle, fawn, cream, or white with brindle patches. This patchy pattern is called "pied."

The breed's history began in Paris during the mid-nineteenth century. It likely resulted from cross-breeding English Toy Bulldogs with local Parisian ratters. During the Industrial Revolution, lace workers from Nottingham moved to Normandy, France. They brought many small dogs with them. English breeders often sent small Bulldogs to France if they had faults, like upright ears. By 1860, the Toy Bulldog was very popular in France, but few remained in England. The name "Bouledogue Français" is a contraction of words meaning "ball" and "mastiff."

Different people helped shape how the breed looks today. In the late 1800s, artists like Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted these dogs. In America, the breed arrived in 1885 for breeding programs. At the 1896 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, a judge named George Raper preferred "rose ears" that fold at the tip. However, American owners preferred the erect bat ear. They formed the French Bull Dog Club of America to set a new standard. In England, the breed faced more resistance. The Kennel Club did not recognize them as a separate breed until 1905.

A major characteristic of the breed is brachycephaly. This term describes a shortened snout and a pushed-in face. This physical shape can cause many health issues. It can lead to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, which makes breathing difficult. It can also cause hyperthermia, or overheating. This happens because the dogs cannot cool their bodies effectively through panting.

Because of these breathing risks, many commercial airlines ban the breed from flying.

French Bulldogs also face several other medical challenges. They are prone to skin fold dermatitis, which is inflammation in their wrinkles. They also face issues like patellar luxation, a condition involving the kneecap. A UK study found that 72.4% of French Bulldogs had at least one health issue. Common problems include ear infections, diarrhea, and conjunctivitis. They are also prone to hereditary cataracts and neurological issues like disk herniation.

Their reproduction is also unique. Over 80% of litters require a Caesarean section to be delivered safely.

Because of these health factors, the breed has a shorter life expectancy than many others. A 2024 UK study found their life expectancy is about 9.8 years. This is lower than the 12.7 years seen in other purebred dogs. In Japan, pet cemetery data also showed they had the lowest life expectancy of all studied breeds. Despite these difficulties, the breed remains a global favorite. Their popularity continues to rise in countries like Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
