A miniature horse is a unique type of horse known for its small stature.

Breeders create these animals to look like smaller versions of full-sized horses. They possess the same physical characteristics as large horses but at a much lower height. Despite their appearance, they are genetically closer to pony breeds like the Shetland. They come in many different colors and coat patterns. These animals are found in many nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. They are also found in Argentina, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Namibia, and the Philippines.

Because of their specific breeding, miniature horses have different health needs than larger horses. They are generally considered hardy animals. Their typical life span is between 25 and 35 years. This is often longer than the lifespan of some full-sized horse breeds. They rarely suffer from ailments common in large horses, such as laryngeal hemiplegia or navicular disease. However, they are more likely to develop conditions like hyperlipaemia. This is a condition that may lead to hepatic lipidosis. They may also face eclampsia, which is another illness rare in larger horses.

Dental issues are a significant concern for miniature horses due to their mouth structure. They often experience dental misalignment or overcrowding. Two specific types of misalignment are brachygnathism, known as "parrot mouth," and prognathism, known as "sow mouth." These issues can cause the retention of caps or sinus infections during tooth eruption. Poor mastication, or chewing, is a serious problem for these horses. If they cannot chew properly, they may develop colic. This stomach pain can be caused by enteroliths, faecoliths, or sand inside the body.

History shows that miniature horses have been documented in Europe since the late eighteenth century. In the first half of the twentieth century, Lady Estella Mary Hope and her sister, Lady Dorothea, bred small horses in England. Another important history began in Argentina during the mid-1800s. A man named Patrick Newtall developed the Falabella breed there. After Newtall passed away, his son-in-law, Juan Falabella, took over the breeding methods. Juan introduced new bloodlines to the herd. He used the Welsh Pony, the Shetland pony, and small Thoroughbreds. Through considerable inbreeding, he achieved a consistently small size for the herd.

In South Africa, the history of the miniature horse is also well-documented. Wynand de Wet began selective breeding of Shetland stock in Lindley around 1945. This led to the development of the South African Miniature Horse. A breed association was established for these horses in 1984. Later, in 1989, the South African Stud Book and Livestock Improvement Association recognized the breed. By the year 2011, there were approximately 700 of these horses in South Africa. The morphology, or physical shape, of these horses varies greatly. Some look like Arab horses, while others have the conformation of a draft horse.

People use miniature horses for many different purposes today. Many are kept simply as companion animals to provide friendship. Because of their size, they are usually only suitable for the smallest riders to ride. However, they are very capable of driving, which means pulling small carts. Many also participate in competitive horse show events. Some miniature horses even perform highly specialized tasks. A small number are trained to serve as guide horses for blind individuals.

Guide horses provide a unique service in certain parts of the world. This is particularly important in Muslim cultures. In these cultures, some people consider dogs to be unclean. A miniature horse can serve as a helpful guide in these communities. This shows how these small animals can connect to different cultural needs and social systems. Whether as companions, workers, or guides, miniature horses play many roles in human society.
