They are bred to look like full-sized horses. They show the same shapes and features as big horses. However, they are much shorter in height. Even though they look like small horses, they are genetically more like ponies. They are very similar to the Shetland pony breed. These horses come in many different colors and coat patterns. They are found in many countries around the world. These places include the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

These small horses are quite hardy and strong. They often live longer than many big horse breeds. Their usual life span is between 25 and 35 years. Their health is different from large horses in many ways. They rarely get certain illnesses that big horses often face. Instead, they may get other illnesses that are rare in large horses. One such condition is called hyperlipaemia. They may also face problems with their teeth. Their teeth might not line up correctly in their mouths. This can make it hard for them to chew their food well. Poor chewing can lead to a stomach ache called colic.

History shows that these horses began in Europe. People have written about them since the late eighteenth century. In the first half of the twentieth century, two sisters bred them in England. These sisters were named Lady Estella Mary Hope and Lady Dorothea. In Argentina, a man named Patrick Newtall developed the Falabella breed. He began this work in the mid-1800s. After he died, his son-in-law, Juan Falabella, took over the herd. Juan added different bloodlines to the group. He used Welsh Ponies and Shetland ponies for breeding. He also used small Thoroughbred horses. This helped the herd stay consistently small.

There are many different types of miniature horses today. In South Africa, Wynand de Wet began breeding them around 1945. He used Shetland stock to start his work. By the year 2011, there were about 700 of these horses in South Africa. A breed association was started in 1984 to help them. In 1989, the South African Miniature was officially recognized. These horses can look many different ways. Some look like Arab horses. Others have the shape of a draft horse. This means they can look very different from one another.

People use miniature horses for many fun activities. Many people keep them as companion animals to be friends. They are often too small for most people to ride. However, they are very good for driving. This means they can pull small carts. Some horses also go to competitive horse shows.

A small number of these horses have a very important job. They can be trained as guide horses for blind people. This is helpful for people in Muslim cultures. Some people in those cultures consider dogs to be unclean. A miniature horse can be a wonderful helper instead.
