They are often called heavy horses or work horses. These animals are much larger than riding horses. They have very muscular bodies and broad, short backs. Their powerful hindquarters help them pull heavy loads. Many breeds also have thick hair on their lower legs. This hair is called feathering.

These traits make them perfect for pulling heavy things.

Working with a draft horse is a step-by-step job. First, they are trained to be calm and patient. A docile temperament is very important for their work. This helps them stay steady while pulling heavy wagons. They use their strength to perform tasks like plowing fields.

They can also pull heavy wheeled vehicles. These include horsebuses, trolleys, and large freight wagons. Their heavy bone structure supports this intense pulling work.

Humans have used horses for many different duties for a long time. People used selective breeding to make specific types of horses. They wanted light, energetic horses for fast riding. They also wanted heavy, calm horses for pulling military wagons.

Some people think medieval war horses were like modern draft horses. However, those war horses were actually more like modern riding breeds. The Percheron breed likely has the closest ties to those old war horses.

Many famous draft breeds moved from Europe to the United States. In the late 19th century, thousands of these horses were imported. Percherons came from France, while Shires came from England.

Clydesdales came from Scotland and Brabants came from Belgium. By 1915, the Percheron was the most common draft breed in America. During World War I, over half a million draft horses were used. Eventually, the invention of the tractor reduced the need for these horses.

Today, draft horses still play many important roles. They appear in parades, horse shows, and pulling competitions. Some groups, like the Amish, still use them on farms. They are also useful for logging in thick woods. In these places, big machines might not fit.

You can even see them towing canal boats in England. Some places, like Mackinac Island, use them for transport because cars are not allowed. They are amazing animals that connect our past to our present.
