These horses are very striking to look at. Most of them have an all-black coat. They do not usually have any white markings. They are known for having long, flowing manes and tails. You can also see feathering on their legs. This is long hair that grows on their lower limbs.

Friesian horses have a very specific way they look and move. They stand at an average height at the withers. They usually weigh between 1,250 and 1,450 pounds. They are known to be energetic and active. However, they are also very gentle and docile. This makes them wonderful to work with.

This breed has a very long history. There is evidence of horse populations in Friesland from thousands of years ago. As far back as the 4th century, there were mentions of Friesian troops. An English writer named Anthony Dent wrote about these mounted troops. In the 11th century, many illustrations showed horses like this. Some people believe these horses were ridden by William the Conqueror.

In the past, they were even used to carry knights into battle.

Keeping the breed alive has been a hard job. The breed nearly became extinct more than once. In the early 20th century, only three breeding stallions were left. This was because other horse breeds were becoming more popular. Farmers also started using machines on dairy farms instead of horses.

To help, a studbook was founded in 1879. Today, the KFPS is the official group that protects the breed. They use DNA testing to make sure the horses stay healthy.

Today, Friesians are used for many fun things. About seven percent of horses in the Netherlands are Friesians. Many people use them for riding and dressage. Dressage is a type of riding that looks like a dance. They are also used for driving, sometimes with a high-wheeled cart called a Sjees. Because they look so elegant, they are very popular in movies. You might see them in historic or fantasy films.
