In North or South America, the name Holstein usually describes the cattle. In Europe, the name Friesian is often used for animals with traditional roots. Some animals are a mix of both, and people call them Holstein-Friesian. This group is very important for making the milk we use every day.

These cows are easy to spot because of their beautiful patterns.

Because of a special gene, no two cows look exactly the same. Some cows even look blue if white hairs mix with black hairs. This is sometimes called a blue roan color.

These cows are famous for how much milk they produce. A single cow can produce about 7,655 litres of milk in one year. Over its whole life, a cow might produce around 26,000 litres. This milk is full of protein and butterfat.

The history of these cows goes back a very long time.

Near 100 BC, groups of people moved their cattle to the North Sea shores. These early cattle were likely black, while other Friesian cattle were light-colored. For 2,000 years, these breeders kept their cattle strains very pure. In the year 1282, big floods created the Zuiderzee water body. This split the cattle breeders into two separate groups. One group lived in West Friesland, and the other lived further east. The rich land in the Netherlands was perfect for growing grass for them.

Many different places helped shape these famous cattle.

In the United States, Dutch farmers brought black and white cattle to New York and Connecticut. In 1795, the Holland Land Company sent eight more animals to New York. Later, in 1810, more cows were brought to Vermont. In Great Britain, the Holstein breed became very popular after the 1970s. By 2005, Holstein-related cattle made up 61% of all dairy cattle in the UK. This includes many different types like the pure Friesian and the Holstein-Friesian cross. The breed has truly become a global success.

You can see how these cows connect to your own life through food. The milk from these cows is used to make delicious things like butter and cheese.

In the past, farmers wanted animals that could provide both milk and meat. Today, many breeders choose specific cows just for milk or just for beef. This helps farmers produce exactly what people need. Whether they are in a field in Europe or a farm in America, these cows are part of a huge global system. They help feed people in many different ways every single day.
