This milk is turned into many products like cheese and butter. It is a very old way of life for many people. Some evidence shows it began in northwestern Anatolia during the seventh millennium BC.

Other parts of the world joined in later. For example, it appeared in eastern Europe in the sixth millennium BC. It reached Africa in the fifth millennium BC and Britain by the fourth millennium BC.

In the past, milking was a very different job.

Most farmers milked their cows by hand on small farms. They would often fill barrels with milk every morning. Then, they used wagons to bring that milk to town markets. In the United States, a single person could only milk about twelve cows a day. This was hard work that took a lot of time and effort.

New inventions changed how milk is collected from animals.

Early machines were just buckets that sat on the floor. Later, the milking pipeline was created in the late 20th century. This used pipes to pull milk up from the cow. The milk then flows by gravity into a storage tank. This helped farmers because they did not have to carry heavy buckets anymore.

Modern farms often use special buildings called milking parlors.

In a herringbone parlor, cows stand in rows to be milked. In a rotary parlor, the cows stand on a large, turning platform. This platform moves like a slow merry-go-round.

Some farms even use robotic milking systems. These robots can milk cows automatically without a person. This allows the cows to choose when they want to be milked.

Keeping milk fresh is another very important part of farming.

Farmers use cooling technology to keep the milk from spoiling. This helps stop the growth of bacteria that can make milk go bad. In 2017, the world produced about 827,884,000 tonnes of milk.

Large countries like India, the United States, China, and New Zealand are major producers. While farming is helpful, people also work to manage waste and protect the environment.
