These shops are where people go to buy milk products.

Making dairy products involves many careful steps. On some farms, people still milk animals by hand.

A person might sit on a low stool. They grasp the teats of the animal with their hands. They squeeze their fingers from the top to the tip. This action pushes the milk out into a bucket.

Modern farms often use machines to do this work. They use a milking parlour to keep things organized. Some parlours are large rotary structures that move cows in a circle. This helps the workers handle many cows very quickly.

Humans have worked with milk animals for thousands of years.

Long ago, nomads moved with their herds. The animals and the people helped each other survive. In the past, milking was a small job done at home. This was called a cottage industry. People used the milk for their own families. The word dairy comes from Old English words. It relates to a female servant or a dairymaid.

In the United States, many farmers join cooperatives. In 2002, 196 cooperatives sold 86% of the milk in the U.S. This is much less than in the 1940s. Back then, there were 2,300 cooperatives. Today, milk is often moved by large trucks.

These trucks take raw milk to a dairy plant. Some plants stay in rural areas to make cheese. Other plants stay near cities to make yogurt. This helps fresh food reach people very quickly.

It links animals, workers, and machines together. The way we get milk changes depending on where we live. In the European Union, there are rules for milk contracts. These rules help farmers and processors work together. In the United Kingdom, there are also codes for good practice. Even as technology changes, the goal stays the same. People want to turn fresh milk into food we love. This process has been part of human life for a very long time.
