An udder is a special part of some female animals.

It is a single mass that hangs beneath the animal. This organ is made of mammary glands. These glands are what make milk for young animals. In many mammals, these glands are called breasts instead. For example, primates and elephants have glands on their chests. However, dairy animals like cows have udders near their groin.

Each udder works in a specific way. It is made of pairs of mammary glands. These glands have parts called teats that stick out. The number of glands depends on the animal. Cattle, camels, and deer usually have two pairs. Sheep and goats normally have only one pair. Some other animals may even have many pairs.

Keeping an udder healthy is a very important job. Farmers must use good hygiene to keep milk clean. They want to prevent a sickness called mastitis. This happens when bacteria move into the teat canal. If this occurs, the cow might make less milk. Farmers can use products to soothe chapped skin. They can also give cows vitamin E in their food.

Tiny living things called microbes live on the udder too. This is called the udder microbiome. Some bacteria, like Staphylococcus, can cause infections. Other good bacteria can actually stop bad ones from growing. These good bacteria release things called bacteriocins. These help protect the animal from getting sick. A healthy udder has a wide variety of these microbes.

Many things in the world can touch the udder. It touches bedding, soil, and milking tools. Because of this, germs can move from the ground to the milk. For example, Listeria is often found in the environment. Some germs like Pseudomonas are found in the soil. This is why cleaning the cow's home is so helpful. It keeps the milk safe for people to drink.
