These animals are very hardy and strong. They can live well even on poor land. People use them for two main jobs. This is called being a dual-purpose breed. They provide milk and they also provide beef.

A cow might give 1,200 kg of milk. Some farms even reach 1,500 kg per year. Most of their coats are solid black. You might also see red or dun colors.

Some Dexters have very short legs. This happens because of chondrodysplasia. This is a type of dwarfism. It makes the legs much shorter than other cows.

These cows are 6 to 8 inches shorter. If two cows with this gene mate, it is risky. There is a 25% chance the calf will not survive. These stillborn calves are called bulldogs. They have bulging heads and very short limbs. This happens more often in black cows.

Another health issue is called PHA. This stands for pulmonary hypoplasia with anasarca. It means the lungs do not form fully.

Fluid can also build up in the tissue. You cannot see PHA on the outside of the cow. Farmers must use a DNA test to find it. Just like with dwarfism, certain cows should not be bred together. This helps keep the whole herd healthy and strong.

These cows have a long history in Ireland. They started in County Kerry in the 1700s.

They might be named after a man named Dexter. He worked on the estates of Lord Hawarden. In 1842, a man named David Low wrote about them. He called them the Dexter Breed. They were part of the Kerry breed for a long time. In 1863, they were shown in their own class. A special herd book was made in 1890.

Dexters can be found in many places today. They were brought to England in 1882.

They almost disappeared in Ireland, but they survived elsewhere. Now, sixteen countries report having them. These places include Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. The largest groups live in Denmark and the United Kingdom. In Ireland, the breed is still considered at risk. However, the rest of the world says they are not at risk.
