Australian Lowline

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Australian Lowline is a special kind of beef cattle. These animals are very small compared to other breeds. They are not a dwarf breed, though. They are just naturally small by design. These cattle are known for being quiet and calm. They also adapt well to many different types of weather.

Scientists created this breed through a long study. They worked at a research center in Trangie. The team used black Aberdeen Angus cattle to start. They wanted to see how growth rates affect profit. They also studied how animals use food to grow. They compared small animals to large animals eating grass. This helped them see which animals were most efficient.

This research project lasted for nineteen years. It began in 1974 at the research center. The scientists made three separate groups of cattle. One was the High Line group with fast growth. Another was the Control Line group. The third was the Low Line group. This group started with 85 cows and some bulls. It eventually grew to more than 400 animals.

By the end, Lowlines were 30% smaller than the High Line group. The experiment ended in the early 1990s. Then, the cattle were sold at an auction. A special group called the Australian Lowline Cattle Association formed in 1992. They published their first herd-book in 1993. That book listed 150 cows and 36 bulls. Today, members live in Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA.

Lowlines have many useful traits for farmers. Most are solid black, but some are solid red. They are naturally polled, which means they have no horns. They do less damage to pasture land than big cattle. They also do not need very strong fences. Farmers raise them for tasty, well-marbled beef. Cows also give plenty of milk to their calves.
