Dexter cattle are a unique breed of small cattle known for their hardiness.

They are considered a dual-purpose breed. This means they are raised for both milk and beef. These animals are very efficient grazers. They can thrive even on poor quality land where other breeds might struggle. Because of their size and strength, they remain an important part of livestock history.

Physical traits define the Dexter breed. They are much smaller than many other cattle. Bulls usually measure between 100 and 120 centimeters at the withers. Cows are even smaller, often measuring about 90 centimeters. Their average weight is approximately 350 kilograms. Most Dexters have solid black coats. However, you may also find red or dun colored cattle.

While they were once always horned, some polled examples exist today. Polled cattle are those born without horns.

Some Dexter cattle carry a specific gene for chondrodysplasia. This is a form of dwarfism that results in shorter legs.

Specifically, the shortness is seen from the knee to the fetlock. Affected cattle are typically 6 to 8 inches shorter than others. This occurs when a cow is heterozygous, meaning it carries one copy of the gene. If two cattle with this gene are bred together, the calf may be homozygous. This means the calf has two copies of the gene. This can lead to a 25% chance of a premature abortion. These stillborn calves are called bulldogs. They have bulging heads, compressed noses, and protruding lower jaws.

Another health concern is pulmonary hypoplasia with anasarca, or PHA. This condition involves the incomplete formation of the lungs.

It also causes a serum fluid to accumulate in the fetal tissue. Unlike chondrodysplasia, PHA shows no outward physical signs. Farmers cannot see PHA just by looking at the animal. It can only be detected through DNA testing. Because of these risks, breeders must be careful not to mate affected animals. This helps prevent these difficult health issues in the herd.

The history of the Dexter begins in the eighteenth century. They originated in County Kerry in south-western Ireland. The breed may be named after a man named Dexter. He was a factor for the estates of Lord Hawarden on Valentia Island. In 1842, an agriculturalist named David Low described them as the "Dexter Breed." He noted that people called round, short-legged Kerry cattle "Dexter." Until the mid-nineteenth century, they were seen as a type of Kerry cattle. By 1863, they were shown in a separate class at Royal Dublin Society shows.

Organized record-keeping helped define the breed over time. A joint herd-book for Kerry and Dexter cattle was established in 1890. In 1917, the Kerry and Dexter Cattle Society of Ireland was formed. This group later became the Kerry Cattle Society of Ireland in 1919. The breed was brought to England in 1882. While the Dexter nearly disappeared in Ireland, it was maintained in England and the United States. Today, sixteen countries across Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania report having them. The largest populations are currently in Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Understanding the Dexter requires looking at its conservation status. Worldwide, the breed is listed as "not at risk." However, the situation is different in its home country. In Ireland, the breed is listed as "at risk/critical." This means the population in Ireland is very low. Despite these challenges, the breed remains useful for farmers. They provide an average of 1,200 kg of milk per lactation. Some farms can even reach 1,500 kg. While the meat flavor may be different from other breeds, their efficiency is unmatched.
