Most Dexters have black coats. Some are red or dun. These cows are very hardy. They can live well on poor land. They are a dual-purpose breed. This means they provide both milk and beef.

Some Dexters have very short legs. This is caused by chondrodysplasia. This is a type of dwarfism. It makes their legs much shorter. A DNA test can find this gene.

Some cows also have PHA. This is a lung problem. It does not show on the outside. Only a DNA test can find it. Because of this, farmers should not breed certain cows together. Many countries now keep these cows. The largest groups live in Denmark and the United Kingdom.
