These horses have a muscular build. They often have broad, short backs. Many breeds have long hair on their lower legs. This is called feathering.

Long ago, people needed different kinds of horses. They wanted light horses for fast riding. They wanted heavy horses for hard work. Draft horses are calm and patient. This helps them work well. In the 1800s, many people used them for hauling goods. They even moved items to and from train stations.

Many breeds came from Europe. The Percheron came from France. Shires came from England. Clydesdales came from Scotland. Today, people use them for many things. They pull wagons in parades. They help in woods where big machines cannot fit. They even pull canal boats in England.
