Ponies often look different from large horses. They have thick hair and heavy coats. Their manes and tails are very thick too. They have short legs and wide bodies. They also have small heads and large eyes.

Many ponies live in cold places. This helps them stay warm. Ponies are very strong for their size. Some can pull much more than they weigh. Even small ponies can pull 450 percent of their weight!

They are also easy to feed. A pony may only need half the hay a big horse needs. They are smart and friendly. Some people say they are a bit stubborn. This can happen if they are not trained well. Properly trained ponies are great for children to ride. Larger ponies can carry adults too.
